March 30th—Otautau R.C. March 30tli, 31st or April 27th, 28th — Manawatu R.C. NOTES AND COMMENTS Acceptances for events on the first day of. the Wellington Cup meeting close on Friday night. A few of the South horses engaged at Trentham will be racing at the Ashburton meeting on Saturday. The Papakura trainer, J. T. Jamieson, lias not had much luck of late. A change may be effected at Trentham, where he has a good number of horses engaged. The Trentham-trained mare, Lady Passenger, has engagements at both the Wellington and Foxton meetings. 'Hie hurdles at the latter gathering would appear to be the best race for her. The dual Stewards winner. Comic Song, is entered at Trentham. The AVinkio gelding will be the hope of the South Island in the sprint events at the meeting. Piuthair failed to do any good at the Auckland meeting, but her trainer reported the mare not to be herself. She will probably show up during the course of the Wellington meeting. In his ' races of late, Oration has been running on at the finish, 1 and he appears to he more solid now than ever before. He is nicely weighted at Trentham with 7.3 in the open sprints. The Swell, who is nominated in the hack races at Foxton, comprises one of R. Johnston’s team at New Plymouth. The second day of the Stratford meeting at New Year he won the maiden race in fine style, and there should be further victories in store for him.

| Though she has been expected to I show 1 up in her races this season, the j Absurd mare, Merry Jest, has failed j to date. She is getting down in the weights and is in on the minimum in tile Telegraph Handicap at Trentham. Happy Days, who has not been seen in the North Island since E. Penman sold him nearly two years ago, is amongst those weighted for the Wellington meeting. The handicapper took no chances with Stormy the first day at Trentham in giving him 9.10 in the hack six furlong event. The connections of the much-discussed horse must now have some idea of wliat thev will get in the Douro Cup the second day. It took High Pitch a long while to come good, but wheh he did the time spent in waiting was worth .while. IViill 8.0 in the Telegraph .Handicap at Trentham the Sarchedon gelding will have to be given every respect. The once good horse Income is, on ihis displays over the holiday meetings, only a shadow of himself. At Stratford lie ran extremely badly, i A half-brother to Ruffles was rac- | ing at the Stratford meeting at New [ Year. He is by Lucullus, and races :as Niblick. On his showings at/ the i meeting ho is nowhere near the class of his relative. Seatown is to contest the Wellington Cup', and lie will not altogether be neglected. The three-year-old is very hardy and comes up remarkably fresh after his races, which to date have been hard ones.

Last year the Fordell trainer, F. Tilley, won tlie Wellington Cup with the Panmure mare Enthusiasm. This year he will have another of the same fire’s .stock to represent him in Maudane. So far this season the mare has quite failed to reproduce her form of twelve months back.

With 9st to carry Ngata has been given a great show to ivin liis second Foxton Cut). Of course he is getting no youngster, hut until recently lie would be giving away a lot more weight than this.

Royal Mint, who won the Stratford Cup, is a half-brother to Paddington Green. Had the latter possessed the courage Royal Mint does he would have won the Douro Cup instead of being beaten by the southerner, Euripos.

It is feared that To Kara will never race again. He was reported amiss after contesting the Auckland Cup. and it is now said his racing days are ovet.

Rapine won the Summer Cup at Ellerslie with 10.3, and with a pound less ami two furlongs extra to cover lie is b.y no means out of it in the Wellington Cup. A horse with engagements at both Wellington and Foxton is Killocra. His stable mate, Polyphemus, is also engaged at the smaller meeting.

The Otaki trainer, D. Webster, will not lie at the Wellington meeting, lie having engaged bis team at Foxton. Sir George Clifford is going to have a number of horses carrying his colours at Trentham. Centrepiece will be the sheet anchor of the team. There will be no shortage of riders on the first day of the Foxton meeting. A number of jockeys will travel to the fixture from Trentham. it being an off da.v at the latter place.

That the apprentice, T. Tito, has fully recovered from his broken leg he showed at Stratford by riding three winners. The Maori lad rode very well, too.

Shirley has failed since she won at Trentham in the spring. The Absurd mare has a liking for the Wellington

track, and may come back to winning form next week.

Another horse that has always run good races at Trentham is Licinius, though liis efforts have only brought him minor platings. Hq is nicely placed in the Telegraph Handicap. Big things are expected of Otairi (Paper Money—lsabel), a two-yenr-old in F. Tilley’s stables at Fordell. • All of the Leightons raced so far have- shown speed, and Mr \V. G. Stead must feel more than pleased that he bought the English horse. Limerick is reported to be progressing favourably at Iticcarton, and it is hoped to have him at his best lor the autumn racing. It is said there was some trouble over the ownership of a hors© that won a race at the New Plymouth meeting.
