DEFEATS JAPANESE CHAMPION BY OVER SIXTY YARDS BREAKS WORLD’S RECORD YOUNG AUSTRALIAN NOW A GREATER SWIMMER THAN EVER By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. (Received January 9, 5. <5 p.m.) SYDNEY, January 9. The State swimming championships were decided in fine, dull weather, before a record attendance. The SBO yards championship resulted:— Andrew Charlton (N.S.W.) 1 ' Katsuo Takaishi (Japan) 2 —. Kelly (N.S.W.) 3 Both Charlton and Takaishi got a poor start, but speedily passed the other three competitors. The Japanese touched first at no yards, slightly ahead of Charlton, and at 220 yards was a foot head. At 330 yards he was again first to touchr, and they went on, neck and neck, till 440 yards, when Charlton drew away, and, swimming strongly, won by 66 yards in iomin 32sec, lowering the former world’s record by 5 2*ssec. The 100 yards championship resulted:—Henry 1, Kirkland 2, Doyle 3. Won on a touch. Time, 56 3~ssec. The world’s record, iomin 37 2-ssec, was held by Arne Borg, of Sweden, who established it on August 25th, 1925. Charlton Avas’Australia’s representative at the Paris Olympiad in 1924, and there broke the world’s record for 1500 metres. On returning home he announced his retirement, and since then has spent most of his time in the country. He returned to Sydney to train for a race'with Takaishi, and his performance shows that he is now a greater swimmer than ever.
