THE QUESTION OF SPEED. .Tt has been estimated by an expert that to do the voyage to Australia from •England at 22 knots will require a eteamer of 30,000 tons, and at 24.000 tons, as suggested by Sir James Connolly's scheme, that is. if anything like a cargo is to be carried. It is, of course, natural that if others will put down the money, the scheme will have Mr Bruce's blessing, but from the investors’ point of view it is felt by expert shipowners that it must be a failure. A lino of 22knot steamers would naturally rely to a large extent on its mail subsidy, but if Sir Samuel Hoare is right, that there is no technical or operational reason why, by aeroplane or airship, London should not be brought within a fortnight of the furthest cities and. territories of the Empire—which would reduce the journey to Australia to 11 days—what future is there for n 22-knot service? A few years ago the late Lord Pirrie was talking to a well-known shipowner, and, in discussing airplanes, he gave it as his Opinion that in the near future they and airships would, be used for carrying the mails of the world, aiyl that no vessel would be built of a greater speed than 1G knots. SCHOONER’S ADVENTUROUS CAREER. Tim wooden hulk, Inca, which was towed to sea from Sydney on December 22nd and destroyed by fire, originally nailed under the American flag, and was for many years employed in the lumber trade between the Pacific Coast and Australia. Her seagoing career ended in February, 1921. When 400 miles off the New South Wales coast she was struck by a terrific cyclonic storm, which left her dismasted and waterlogged. In this plight she was picked up by the steamer Como, and a salvage claim for several thousand pounds was paid to the owners of that vessel for bringing tli© Inca into port. Anxious for the safety of his family and crew, the Inca’s captain, after the vessel was dismasted, sent them away in a lifeboat, excepting the donkeyman, who stayed with him. The lifeboat was adrift for only 24 hours, when the occupants were picked up by a passing steamer and taken on to Honolulu. The captain and donkeyman kept the ship afloat, and after a week’s drift they wero found and towed to Sydney by the freighter. The Inca was a five-masted schooner, and made many voyages across tho Pacific. She visited Auckland over 15 years ago, when she brought nearly 2.009,000 ft of lumber from Columbia River. She was tho first fire-masted schooner to visit Auckland.
