OIL INTERESTS SUSPECT

“TRYING TO SLIP THE UNITED STATES INTO WAR” CHARGES MADE IN CONGRESS LANDING OF NAVAL FORCE IN NICARAGUA CRITICISED By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. Australian and New Zealand Cable Association. (Received January g, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 8. Charges that United States oil interests are attempting to create war between the United States and Mexico were made in both Houses of Congress to-day, when the landing of naval forces at Nicaragua was discussed. “Let the President go slow!” shouted Senator Heflin (Democrat), who charged American oil interests with “attempting to slip the United States into war.” Senator Shipstead (Farmer-Labour) declared: “I would like to know where we are going, and the reason why?” Representative Huddleston (Democrat) described as false and malicious what he claimed to be an attempt by the State Department to give the impression that Mexico fostered the Bolshevism which was sweeping over Nicaragua. After asserting that the United States was deliberately and consciously drifting into war with Mexico, he said there were interests in the United States who had for years been trying to seize the mining and oil resources of that country.
