Loeb and Leopold, the youthful murderers, who were sentenced to life imprisonment in 1925, were sued for 100,000 dollars by Charles Ream, a chauffeur, who alleged that they criminally mutilated him in 1923 before the murder of Franks.
The jury was discharged nfter deliberating for 25 hours, and being unable to arrive at a decision.
