FIRE AT HASTINGS

SEVERAL PREMISES BURNED HEAVY LOSS OF STOCK. Per Press Association. HASTiiNGH, January 6. Firo broke out early this morning in wooden buildings on Government railway property in Russell street, leased as business places. It originated in. a fruit shop kept by Zakarus, who left for Wellington last Tuesday on a visit. The shop and stock were completely destroyed. Tbo flames .spread from the upper story to Webber’s chemist’s storeroom upstairs on one side, and to Barcham’s photography rooms, also upstairs, on the other. Webber’s stock was practically destroyed by fire and water, and the shop window and stock underneath were considerably affected. Barcham’s rooms and the contents were burnt out, and Mendey’s fancy store, a motor service office, and the Economic Grocery on the corner of Heretaunga street suffered considerably from water The properties were leased by AVebber. of Hastings, Robjohns, of Napier, and Rodgers, of Hastings. The insurances of which details are available are-. AVebber, stock and fittings, in tho Atlas Office, £000; in the Commercial and General, £500; in the Standard, £200; in the South British, £200; in tho National, £100; in the Government Fire, £IOOO. Mnndel’s stock, in the\ Eagle and Star and British Dominions, £000; Economic Grocery, stock and fittings, in the South British, £7OO.
