TOWN V. COUNTRY

CRICKET TEAMS SELECTED LOWRY AND BRICE TO BE CAPTAINS SELECTOR ON COUNTRY TEAM Cricket lovers will be glad to know that —with, two exceptions—both town and country teams have been chosen for the match to be played in Wellington Cricket Week on December 17th, 18th and 20th, under Plunket Shield rules. Mr A. M. Ongley, selector of the country team, forwarded the list of players selected to represent the country. The team had to he picked early, he wrote, in order to get the necessary leave, and this had prevented him seeing any interassociation matches with the exception of Taranaki v. Wanganui. There appeared to be plenty of useful batsmen offering, but good bowlers appeared to be scarce in the country associations. Hope's illness robbed the team of a .eood deal of its bowling-strength. The country was well off for keepers, Lowry, Kingston and Ritchie all being available for selection. Kingston and Lowry were good batsmen as well as keepers. NEW BOWLERS. The only bowlers new to Wellington were Clarke and Mitchell. Clarke was the Taranaki bowler who did so well against Wanganui. Ho was a right hand fast medium bowler making pace off the pitch and swinging under suitable conditions. Mitchell was a right hand slow leg-break bowler. He (the writer) had not seen him in action, but he was highly recommended by Worker. On the whole he thought the team was efuito capable of giving a good account of itself. Some familiar names might be missing, because wherever possible lie had given preference to the younger brigade. The team was as follows: T. H. Lowry, R. Worker, Mitchell (Hawke's Bay); C. S. Dempster, E. H. Bernau, G. Orr (Wanganui); N. Gallichan (Manawatu); G. Clarke, C. Kingston, O. M. Naismith (Taranaki); J. Newman (Nelson). Reserves: C. Lask (Taranaki), D. Cameron (Rangitikei). There was no doubt that in the past the country team had suffered in not having a captain appointed some time before the match, and he suggested tho appointment of Mr Lowry. The. appointment of Mr -. Lowry was agreed to. WELLINGTON TEAM. The following nine players have been selected by Mr Ken Tucker to represent Wellington; S. Brice (captain), J. S. Hiddleston, H. M. McGirr, R. Kortlang, K. James, H. Lambert, A. M. Hollingis, F. T. Baacock, and M. Henderson. The other two and a reserve will be selected after next Saturday's games. The same team will represent Wellington .in the Wellington v. New Zealand Minor Associations on December 21st and 22nd.
