HURLED DOWN SNOW GULLY

BOTANICAL EXPEDITION DR. HILGENDORF INJURED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, December 6. When Dr. Hilgendorf was hurt on Saturday he was climbing in loose snow bn the lower slopes of > Mount Rolleston. He was hurled down a snow gully a considerable distance by an avalanche, snstaining a sprained ankle .and knee. Dr. Hilgendorf, with a party of half a dozen students from Lincoln College, was on a botanical expedition when the snow collapsed, hurling Dr. Hilgendorf down. Hie students scrambled down after him, and, with great difficulty, carried him back up the gully and across the mountain side to Arthur’s Pass. Later messages show that the accident at Mount Rolleston was not serious. Dr. Hilgendorf was the only one injured and he expects to be about again in aTfew days. The fall was caused by loose snow collapsing under his weight and precipitating him several hundreds of feet.
