BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY

AN ENJOYABLE CONCERT. Another very delightful was held at the rooms of the British Sailors' Society on Thursday, the rooms being filled with men from the various ships in port. The programme was arranged by the Pononga Tennis Club, of Petone, and wne thoroughly enjoyed by the large ’ audience. The party was introduced by the society’s port ruissibner, Mr N. i>. Slyfield, who, with a few well-chosen words, spoke of the aims and objects of this branch of the oldest society in the world. Each item was greeted with applause, the performers having to respond with nunfi»r<nis encores. Supper . was served during the interval, and full I justice was done to the good things provided. A vote of thanks was proposed by the chairman of the entertainment committee, who expressed the hope that the party would give another of their enjoyable evenings. This was carried with acclimation and cheers by the men present. The chairman for the evening, Mr Knv XJsmar, replied, saying that the party would be delighted to Come whenever the socioty required them. Two of the items of special mention were the “Oratorio,” by the company, and the farcical sketch entitled "The Obstructive Hat,” tbe latter causing a great deal of amusement. Items were contributed by the following:—Misses E. Birrell, Ct. Usmar, 13. McLeod, Joroas, Walker, N. Walker and Huggins, Messrs A. Leibzoit and R. Usmar. On Wednesday the usual mid-week social evening was held, a large number of men being present. Songs, games and instrumental items were indulged in. Supper was served by the young ladies of the society, and a very pleasant timp spent till 10.45 p.m.
