Thq claims qf the workers included wages, hours of employment, payment of overtime, pretence of employment, and the usual conditions appertaining tp workers. - As this wan the first session upon which the working conditions of thfa particular industry were considered from a Dominion point of view, the work of the council was of a most difficult nqture, and a very strong endeavour is being made by the paiU ties concerned to arrange a settlement of the dispute upon a basis that will afford the workers reasonable remuneration for their work, and fair conditions qf emplpyUJent, whilq at the same time care is being taken that the general interests of the various companies and employers will hq safeguarded. Only a portion of the dispute is being considered in Wellington, viz., that qf the long-distance service car*. The other section dealing with taxis and suburban traffic omhinbues win be dealt with at Auckland.
Mr P. Hally. Conciliation Commissioner, presided. The various unions who are the aplicants ate represented by the following persons as assessors: —A* Kelly (Nelson), R. Gear (WanBanui), H. Harder (Christchurch), Lj uncan (Napier), H. Herbert (Dunedin), D. Mann (Dunedin), M r 4-. Parlane, secretary of Wellington Drivers’ Union, agent. The employers are represented by: —J. W. Sharpe (Petone), T. Free (Auckland), J. Kerr (Auckland), R. McVilly (Wellington), H. I. Knight (Christchurch), R, Brown (Dunedin), fllr B. C. Hammond, New Zealand Employers’ Association, agent. Considerable progress was made during the day, and at 5.30 proceedings were adjourned until to-day (Friday).
