There is great significance in the fact that with the establishment of The British Standard Portland CcitiAnt, Limited* not only will the most modern and up-to-date type of cement mill be established in New Zealand to meet a certain great demand for this indispensable material, but the beet of the cement-pro-; ducing localities in Auckland territory has been acquired, The report of various authorities on tho Cement Industry show that the new company’s site at Whangarei is practically ideal for the purpose; that it combines a variety of facilities superior to any to bo found elsewhere in New Zealand; and thnt it will now bo practicable to supply a huge and definite market for New Zealand cement on the most profitable basis yet known in this country. The company's properties have not only raw materials in practically inexhaustiblo quantities—-over 15*000,000 tons of limestone; huge quantities of white limestone to draw Upon if required; and over 1,000,000 tons of .suitable coal in its own mine—but such factors Ab •suitable mill site, perfect shipping and hnr-. bour facilities, constant fresh Water supply, low working costs owing to elevated position of the qunrfy, all combine to make, in the opinion of Professor F. P. Worley,. Professor of ChemfAtry at Auckland University; Messrs W. J. and J. S. Wilson, cement experts; Mr Stanley Jones, C.E.; Mr Boyd Bertnie, mining engineer, and others, the conditions for the establishment of a cement industry here almost ideal.
The company now offers 133,000 out of its original 213,000 «£l shares io the public, the promoters themselves subscribing for 80,000 shares for Cash. They guarantee 4 per cent, interest on public capital while the mill ie being erected.
