QUEEN MAUD FROM CANADA. . After being delayed for over two days Uormy weather the steamer Queen reached Auckland from Eastern Canadian ports on Monday afternoon. The cargo consists of steel rails, constructural steel, motor-cars and motor parts, tobacco and general merchandise. A portion is being unloaded at Auckland, and the remainder will be discharged' at Wellington, Lyttelton, Dnnedin and New Plymouth. The vessel leaves Auckland to-day for Wellington, and is due here on Sunday. Crossing the Atlantic from Liverpool to Canada to load her present cargo the steamer encountered fogs and icebergs during the last thrfee days before she reachea Sydney, Cape Breton. Owing to the thick weather she could progress only at a very slow speed and at times her engines were stopped to avoid collisions with the ice. From Sydney she went to Montreal for further loading and then to Newport News, where she completed her cargo and took in bunkers.

The Queen Maud sailed from Newport News on August llth and cleared Panama eight days later. In the Pacific the vessel encountered dull threatening weather and a high south-west swell, until last Thursday night, when the wind freshened from the north-west. It blew a haTd gale from that direction for 36 hours and then the wind changed to -the west, but continued with gale force. The steamer was severely buffeted by the high mountainous tfea, which repeatedly broke on board and kept the decks flooded fore and aft. To prevent damage to the .deck-fittings the speed was considerably reduced, but during the* worst of the storm the vessel was hardly able to make steerage way. So severe were the conditions that the speed last four days of the voyage hardly averaged five knots. The storm continued until Cuvier Island was reached oarly yesterday morning, when the conditions improved and better progress was made to port. The Queen Maud is under a twelve months' charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company and will return to Canada to load another cargo* for New Zealand. She was built at Hongkong in 1919 and waa named the War Driver. After being launched she was sold to the Greeks, who renamed her the Evangelos. Later she was sold to her present owners, the Queen Line of Glasgow, which rechristenod her the Queen Maud. Captain C. R.
