CANAL UNDER A MOUNTAIN Connecting the North Sea with the Mediterranean an inland waterway, recently completed by French engineers after nearly 100 years, runs for five miles under a mountain. This required digging a tunnel 47$ft high and 72ft. wide to accommodate big barges. More than 74,000,000 cubic feet of material were removed in the construction, over twice as muclfc as was handled in building the famous St. Gothard tunnel, and 20,000.000 cubic feet more than came out of, the 12-mile-long Simplon bore.
