TOBACCO FOR PRISONERS
EPISODE AT TERRACE GAOL GENEROSITY THAT PROVED COSTLY. Charged with delivering into tho Terrace Gaol a tin of tobacco, a quantity of cigarette papers, and a dozen boxes of matches, John Anslow alias Peter Anslow alias Frederioh Gibbs, aged 42, made his appearance before Mr E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Sub-Inspector Harvey said that Anslow was discharged from the gaol at 10 o’clock on Monday morning. However, in the afternoon he hired an express and returned to get a quantity of lnggage which he had left there. While crossing the yard, he was noticed to throw tobacco, cigarette papers and matches to some prisoners. Mr B. J. Dolan, for the accused, submitted that he had taken a few drinks before he went up to the prison to collect his clothes, and was “lull of tho milk of human kindness.” Mr E. Page, S.M., imposed a fine of £3, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
