HOCKEY

OTAKI DEFEAT WELLINGTON (Special to “Times.”) Two matches between Wellington Huias and Otaki teams were played at Otaki on Saturday. (he home team won both. On arrival the visitors were met at the station by members of the association and otbei hockey enthusiasts. Mr H. Nicholson, chairman of the association, extended a welcome to the visitors, after which the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs J. P. Brandon) were introduced. Mr Brandon, on behalf of the residents, extended a hearty welcome to the Wellington players, stating all were delighted to see them ana-have them in their midst. Mr Brandon also paid a very high compliment to the hospitality of Mr and Mrs Bevan, who, as on previous occasions, had made complete arrangements for the reception of the teams. Choice bouquets, made by Mrs Nicholson, were then presented to Mrs Bevan and Miss Bond (captain of tile Wellington team). Both suitably responded. Mr J. Cottier, captain of the Web lington men’s team, in replying, thanked Messrs Brandon and Nicholson for their cordial welcome. Later in the afternoon the vis-tors were entertained at afternoon tea, when the Mayor again expressed pleasure at tbo visit of the city teams, and trusted all had enjoyed themselves. Mr Brandon also made complimentary remarks for the interest Mr Nicholson had displayed in Otaki, remarks that weie later supported by Messrs Cottier and Bose, members of the Wellington Club. Cheers were accorded Mr Nicholson In the evening the visitors were entertained at a dance at the kiosk, where Mr and Mrs Wheatley proved most attentive. The large diningroom was kindly placed at the disposal of dancers. The lady visitors, during their visit to Otaki, stayed at the seaside resort, and speak highly of the treatment meted out to them. On Sunday, thanks to the kindness and thoughtfulness of Mr “Jock” Reid, the visitors were taken for a motordrive round the seaside resort and to Waikanae. Mr Reid also motored the visitors to the Ration, where cheers were exchanged as the train moved off.
