BROOKLYN PLAY AREA

STILL NOT COMPLETED DEPUTATION TO RESERVES COMMITTEE. Almost three years ago the residents of Brooklyn, through their district association, got busy and built up a fund for the equipment of a children's play area on land to be levelled and otherwise made ready upon certain terms by the City Council. Still the area is net completed, for though the association has contributed approx i tnately £7OO towards the equipment, fencing, etc., and the council between £6OO and £IOO, there is a difference of opinion in regard to the erection of shelter sheds and conveniences foi the children, and the association declines to hand over £SOO it still has !■ hand for the completion of the area A deputation,.consisting of Messr J. H. Whittaker, G. W. Slade. J. ■ I Goldsmith, and G. Read, representing the Brooklyn association, waited upov. the reserves committee of the conuc:l to place befoie 'he members certain objections to the proposals embodied in the council’s plans. The association still ha I in hand a sum of about £50.0 said the speakers, and that they were quite willing to hand over to the council towards the cost of the erection of shelter .hed and conveniences. hut they certainly had not expected to te asked to pay for the whole of the work, for, as a matter of fact, the plans drawn up in the council offices provided for work estimated to cost £4BO. What had been in their minds when, 1H months ago. an offer was made to contribute £SOO. in addition to the £7OO already expended, was that if the council would spend £IOOO the association would back the work to the extent of £SOO After discussion it was agreed that the association’s representatives should confer with the Director of Parks and Reserves in regard to the amendment of teh plans, and that the other point at issue should be further f discussed later.
