RADIO AND PRONUNCIATION
Bo many complaints have been received by the British Broadcasting Company from listeners regarding the pronunciation of its announces that it has appointed a committee of wellknown authorities on the British language to settle the manner in which certain words should be pronounced. This committee consists of Dr. Robert Bridges, the Poet Laureate; Sir Johnston Forbes-Roberts on, Professor Daniel Jones, of London University, author of a standard pronouncing dictionary in use to-day; Mr Logan Pear-sall-Smith. of the Society of Pure English; and Mr Lloyd,James, lecturer in phonetics at the School of Oriental Studies. The committee has already settled the correct pronunciation of a numner of debatable words, among which are: —Acoustics (pronounced a-coo-sticks), gyratory (jy-ratory 1, courtesy (curtesy) gala (gahla), idvll (iddil), charabanc (sharrahang), Marseilles (Marsales), iMieims (Reams).
