JHORNTON’S TEAM GOES EASILY GRIMMETT AND HAILEY IN FORM SMART WORK BY OLDFIELD By Telegraph —Press Assn—Copyright. Australian and NZ. Cable Association. LONDON, September 8. The weather was bright and cool, and the wicket good, when C. I. Thornton's XI. opened to-day against the Australians at Scarborough, Giliigan won the toss, and opened beforq, an attendance of about 15,000. Allen replaced Carr, in Thornton's XT. The following are the teams: Australia—H. L. Collins (captain), J. M. Taylor, C. G. Macartney, J. M. Gregory, T. J. E. Andrews, W. A. Oldfield, A. A. Mailey, J. S. Ryder, W. M. Woodfull, C. Everett, and C. V. Grimmett. Thornton's XI.—A. E. K. Giliigan (captain), G. O. Allen, V. W. O. Jupp, G. T. •S. Stevens, J. B. Hobbs, H. Sutcliffe, P. Holmes, W. Rhodes, M. W. Tate, E. Tyldesley, and H. Strudwick. SUTCLIFFE SOON BOWLED. Sutcliffe, who opened with Hobbs, was neveir comfortable, and was further shaken by a nasty blow on the Tihs from a ball from Gregory. Hobbs, however, played all the bowling confidently, driving to the on and hitting to leg powerfully. Tyldesley, when he had scored 13, gave a difficult chance to Woodfull, and he was unlucky when snicking a ball from the shoulder of bis bat, giving Gregory an easy catch. Holmes and Hobbs carried on brightly, Holmes being stylish and placing well through the slips, and showing smart footwork. Hobbs was specially attractive, but when the total score was 154 he was smartly stumped by Oldfield, the third wicket having produced 65 runs. Hobbs hit eight fours.
FIELDING GOOD. A feature of the afternoon’s*play was the smart fielding of Woodfull and Grimmett, which was very noticeable. Holmes lost his enterprise when Hobbs left, and after adding 41 with the aid of Jnpp, who made a lively start, he tamely returned the ball to Mailey. Jupp was quiescent, and was stumped on going out to a hall from Mailey. The total score was then 202 for the loss of six wickets. The remaining batsmen quickly succumbed to the' wiles of'Mailey and Grimmett, leaving Australia only five minutes to play. s The following are the detailed scores : THORNTON'S XI. First Innings.
