The spring racing began;at Wanganui to-day. under favourable conditions. .• The track was in great, order, and the weather was fine. There was a fair attendance,-but the totalisator turnover fell from £29,263 10s on the opening day of the last spring meeting to £25,165 ios, a decrease of £4098. . The Wanganui Guineas was won very decisively by Lysander,, who was rather big in; condition, and the two principal handicaps were won by Civility and Mireu sonta.

A GOOD THING BEATEN The Taranaki colt Resinous was a better /favourite than High Pitch for the Maiden, and as the race was run High’ Pitch was the best of good-things beaten. Tea Time went to the front at the start, and .when the field settled down -was leading from All Bright, Atone, lamonlte. Airtight, Bronstelly and 6chorr. Schorr: and : Tea Time improved their position before the straight was reached. Meantime High Pitch, who had been snowed in, wa# allowed to drift baok in order that his rider could secure -him a clear passage on the outer. Once he got clear High Pitch flew past the field, and he wgs close- to the leaders at the turn, where he looked to have a chance. He made up still more ground in t£e straight, but after his long run round the field did not finish very and was beaten into third place. Schorr and Tea Time fought out the finish, Schorr winning by a short neck, yrth High Pitch a good half length farther back. Resinous . was i fourth, Liinonite fifth. Airtight sixth, and R<aukura seventh. , Koauau and Nukamai were favourites for the Okehu Hurdles. Both ran good races and filled the principal places. They set -out at a solid clip, and Revel, Comedy Prince, and Tawhei, who were in line, led through the straight the first time from Lucullent, Alaric, and Santiago with Koauau well placed on the rays, . and Nukumai .also, hugging the fenoe. Entering the back stretch Tawehi and Santiago were in front from Comedy Prince, Koauau, Alaric,'and Revel. With three furjongs to go Koauau went out after the leaders, and Nukumai also made his move. Santiago met some at the entrance . to. the straight and was checked.. Koauau took charge as soon" as heads were . straightened up for home, but Nukumai came at him and . buried him for pace in the final run, winning by a length. Tawehi was four lengths away third, Comedy Prince fourth, and Alaric fifth. The fact that the last fence was flattened probably helped Nukumai, hut* he won so* easily that the chances are he would have won in any case.

MAH JONGG GETS HOME Mah Jongs, Mint Leaf, and Bonhomme were fairly evenly backed for the Putiki Hack Race, in which Mah Jofcgg dwelt at the barrier and gave the field a few lengths start. Hathor led through the straight from Mint Leaf, Take Take, Iroe, and Joyeuse, with, Mah Jongg last. As they swune. into the back, Kilperon add Jbyeuse were .in. charge' from Mint Leaf, Inoe, and Bonhomme. Five furlongs from himeKilperonV bridle broke, and his rider nulled him up. hathor, Joyeuse, and Take Take led into the straight from Bonhomme and Mah Jongg, both, of whom were coming feat on the outer. The finish was between Bcnhomine and Mah Jongg, and Mah Jongg stayed' on a little better to win by a neck. . Mint. Leaf, who ran asthough he would be improved by the race, was a half length away , third. Inoe, Take Take, and'Hathor were next. ' Archeen was backed, as a certainty in the Seafield Handicap, but after rurifung a good race, he had -to strike his colours, to Tiega in a close finish, and Ins supporters lost money'over the investment. .Oration and Archeen. led' inthe early stages, both trailing hard, but nearing the straight Tiega was handy. Archeen dashed into the lead just before reaching the entrance' to • the straight, but . Tiega tackled him and . half a* furlong from home was in .front. Tinker saved Archeen for a final effort, but he had taken . a* good deal out . of himself by hard pulling down the back, andhe could not .respond when the call was made. Nevertheless, . he. battled on gamely and Tiega was. ridden right out to win by a short neck. Kilia was a |)oor third, three lengths away, Oration fourth and Kilbronsyth and Vaward next. ■ $ - • EASY WIN IN GUINEAS The withdrawal of Kiosk from the Guineas left only five competitors in the field, and. of those Lysander waaawarm favourite. Punters laid: odds on him, but in the end it turned out that-.the price they got was a good one. . Seatown and Rascar were next in demand, and David Garrick was the outsider. The field was Jet go to. a . snap start. Lysander and Rascal soon got :■ to the front, and ae they entered the hack they were-well-clear of the othera, at the head of which was David Garrick. Seatown at this stage was last. Three furlongs froiri home Lysander was a little in front-of Rascal and Seatown had moved up to third position, but was four lengths he-, hind the leaders. Lysander was going ran® better than 'Rascal at the turn,'-: where Rascal hung out badly. Lysander came away in the straight to win by five lengths from Seatown, who finished on the rails and beat Rascal, who, by this time, was under, the other .fence, by a neck. Alyson. and David Garrick were outclassed. Despite his weight and the fact: that lie drew number seventeen at the barrier, Paddon was made favourite for the Durie Hack Handicap. He . ran A great race, though he failed to fill a place. Pop Off and . Elysianor, both of whom have been showing form ,recently, were well backed, and there: was,.good money for Sovena. Glen Innis and . Penman' wore the first to show out definitely.

and they opened up a small gap in the field, prominent among the others being Flying Juliet,' Monaghan, Sovena,- ana Volplajie. With half the journey covered Paddon was in the middle of- a strung-out field. Approaching the straight Elysianor and Paddon both moved, forward fast. Penman led into the straight and stali?ng-off all challenges, won by three-quarters of a' length ‘ from Volplane; who finished very fast. Sovena was a neck away third, Monaghan fourth, and Paddon fifth. Then came Pip Off, Quillfire, Silver Tray and Glen Innis. The winner was eleventh favourite and paid a substantial dividend. FAVOURITE WINS BIG HANDICAP The Wanganui mare, Civility, was a pronounced favourite for the Marangai Handicap, and in the greatest finish of the day ehe scored a popular victory. Mandane, who did not look quite ready, was second favourtie, but not half as well backed as Civility. There was fair support for Ring Potoa, and J&uphonium was the best backed of the others. The New Plymouth pair, Hipo arid Te Monanui, moved off very smartly at the start and led out of the straight from Star Ranker, Shining Armour, and Mandane, while Roqex was last. Five furlongs from hoine Te Monanui and Hipo still had charge from Star Ranger, with Mask, Mandane and Rouex next. Shining Armour was drifting • toward the rear: ■ Rouex Tan up to the leaders crossing the top, and Civility was presented with an opening and got through toward the front. The field bunched at the bottom of the straight, and there ensued one of -the best of finishes, in which Civility, all out, won by half a length . from the hard-ridden Tanadees, who finished well enough to cut Mandane out of second place by half a length. Rouex, who had given away a lot of ground at the start, was a close fourth, and Te Monanui, Hipo, and Beaumont were next, all handy to the placed horses. t MIREUSONTA SCORES

Of the field which went to the post for the Flying Handicap, Beremoana was a short-priced - favourite carrying more than twice the money invested on' inferno, who was next in demand. Licinius, Orchid, ' and Mireusonta had plenty of followers. Inferno was over-keen at the barrier and eventually started from behind the* field. I/icinius, Mireusonta, Orchid, Merry Jest, and Avola were the leading division- immediately after' the start, and'turning for home Mireusonta had] charge from Orchid, Yoina, Merry Jest, Grand Knight, and Berehibana. Mireusonta stayed on nicely to win' by a lengthy and a half from Xicimus, who was just' ahead of Toma, while Merry Jest was a verydose fourth. .Avola: was fifth, Beremoana sixth, Grand Knight seventh, and then The Lamb and.
