ANOTHER WOMAN

SWIMS ENGLISH CHANNEL IN FASTER TIME IRAN ANY MAN’S EXHAUSTED AT END By Telegraph.—Press Aian. —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Associatiou. (Received August 29, 11.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 29. Mrs Carson entered the water at Cape Gris-Nez at 11.32 on Friday night, and stepped ashore at Dover at 3.10 on Saturday afternoon. She began strongly, swimming 19 strokes to the minute. For breakfast she had cocoa, loaf sugar, and chocolate. Her husband accompanied her in a boat. The last four miles were gruelling; she had to fight her way through the flood tide, and she was exhausted when she reached the shore and staggered into the arms of friends. MOTHER OF TWO CHILDREN She beat the record of any man, but was an hour longer than Miss Gertrude Ederle. Mrs Carson, who was horn in Denmark, is a naturalised American, 27 years of age, and the mother of two children. She said before the swim, “You bet sfour life I’ll swim the Channel! What do you think I left my husband and children for? Gee! You make me feel homesick, asking me can 1 do it.” She attributes her success to sound health, no drinking, no smoking, and no late hours. “There,” she said, “you have it in a nutshell.” LLOYD’S LOSE A BET The “Sunday News” states that an American, Walter Lissbergea, placed a £IOOO bet at Lloyd’s that Mrs Carson would swim the Channel before September Ist, and obtained 20 to 1 odds. Thus he won £20,000. He stated that he intended to give Mrs Carson £SOOO. He has issued a challenge on behalf of Mrs Carson to swim round Manhattan Island, New York, for a purse of £SOOO. CHALLENGE TO EVERYBODY (Received August 29, 11.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 28. The challenge issued by Mr Lissbergea is to “Everybody, Miss Ederle not excepted.” Miss Ederle’s counsel said she would “consider such a challenge when it was received.”
