WELLINGTON SUCCESSFUL EVATT WINS LIGHT-HEAVY LOCAL CHAMPION DEFEATED Per Press Association. NAPIER, August 29. The New Zealand amateur boxing championships concluded last night, before a large attendance. The Treston challenge shield, competed for for the first time, was wrested from Napier by Wellington. Bantam semi-finals: F. Taylor (Auckland) heat D. Kilpatrick (Wellington); N. Kieley (Greymouth) beat H. Larsen (Wellington). Final: Taylor beat Kieley. The latter opened smartly, but Taylor soon recovered from the surprise, and led on points at the end of the second round. The Greymouth lad made an effort to catch up the leeway in the third round, but the Aucklander was equal to the occasion and secured the verdict. Flyweight—Final: L. Purton (Greymouth) beat N. Gammick (Auckland). This pair gave a bright exhibition, and were popular with the onlookers. Featherweight—J. Franklin (Gisborne) beat R. Forward (Wanganui); T. Donovan (New Plymouth) beat N. Reeve (Taneatua); J. Leekie (Otago) beat Franklin. Final:' Leekie beat'Donovan, who rushed things at the opening, hut Leekie smothered well and returned some telling lefts. The Taranaki man’s face was a target for well-directed lefts and rights. In the second round Donovan went for a knock-out, but his swings were wild, and Leekie had him groggy. Keeping a steady head, the Otago boy fought Donovan to a standstill. Lightweight—Final: H. Kindley (Otago) beat E. Morgan (Wellington). Semi-final: Morgan beat L. Phillips (Hastings). Phillips was floored for eight in the second round. He came up smiling, but was sent down again and the reforee stopped the fight. Welterweight J. Nelson (Greymouth) beat F. Smitheram (North Otago); R. La Rousse (Auckland) beat T. Urwin (Wellington). Final: Nelson beat La Rousse. The contest was tame in the first two rounds, but in the last the Aucklander inflicted some effective blows. The judges disagreed, and tho referee’s decision was in favour of Nelson. The decision was loudly disapproved. Middleweight—C. Pocock (Christchurch) beat A. Mitchell (Auckland); A. Cleverley (Wellington) beat A. Cotter (Greymouth). Final: Cleverley heat Peoock. The winner made good use of his height and reach to find his opponent’s jaw. Pocoek improved towards the end of the second round, and was aggressive in the third, but was too tar behind to turn the scale. It was a
gruelling fight, and went to Clere* •ley on the referee’s decision. Light-heavy—Final: G. EvattjfWellington) beat A. Hogg (Aucklanas. This was a ding-dong go almost all the way, fortunes fluctuating. • ITSe verdict was applauded. " Heavyweight—S. Lewis (Wairoa) beat Heyden (Auckland). Final: Lewis 'beat B. Hooper (Wellington). Lewis was aggressive in the second * round, and inflicted severe punish, ment. Hooper was warned for hora< ing and wrestling, and in the third round was disqualified.
