APPEAL TO AMERICA
ENDORSED BY MR MACDONALD Australian and N.Z. liable Association. (Received August 17, 7.45 p.m.) LONDON, August 10. The question of replying to Mr Baldwin’s statement, published ::: America, regarding the coal position, has been settled by an announcement that Mr Ramsay MacDonald lias changed his mind. In a letter to the miners’ women’s oommittec he says: “No one knowing the districts doubts the lumers’ distress. The response to the leaders’ and women’s appeals toward the feeding of the school children, and the Poor Law Relief, have done something, but heart-rending distress slowly and cruelly invades the homes. I join your appeal to America, knowing that friends believe I would not say this unless I were convinced of its justice.” Mr Macdonald complains that the Government is conniving at the drastic curtailment of Poor Law relief to inhuman standards. RUSSIANS STILL HELPING (Received August 17, 7.45 p.m.) MOSCOW, August 16. The Central Council of Labour Unions has transferred to the British Miners’ Federation 200,000 roubles, making the total since the strike 4.917,000 roubles (more than £500,000).
