BLACK CAT ON THE BENCH "While Alderman Neal was presiding at the Guildhall, London, a strange black Manx cat found it way on to the bench, and unconcernedly jumped on to his lap. An officer approached the bench with a view to removing it, but the Alderman waved him away, remarking: “Leave him alone; he is all right.” He sat stroking the cat until it jumped on to the clerk’s notebook, and was taken out of court. The defendant in the dock at the time was an unregistered street trader, and he was discharged with a caution.

AFTER FORTY-ONE YEARS A woman who applied at Willesden for a separation order told the magistrate that she had been married for 41 years, and her husband now said that ho thought it best for them to have a change. Magistrate: That may be; but you have disclosed no legal grounds for a separation.

DIDN’T SEE THE JOKE A judge was pointing out to his court that a witness was not necessarily to be regarded as untruthful because he altered a statement ho had made previously. “For instance,” ho said, “when I entered this court to-da.v I could have declared I had my watch in my pocket. But then I remembered I had left it in the bathroom at home.” When tho judge got home that night his wife said: “Why all this bother about your watch—sending four or five men for it?” “Good heavens!” said the judge; “I didn’t send anyone! What did you do?” “I gave it to the first one who camo; ho knew just where it was.”
