Trophy this season, the only win recorded by the local reps. The New Zealand Council's share of tl)* gate is a little under £2OO, and when all accounts are paid will reduce the deficit on tho trophy fund account to between £2O and £3O. It promised to be much heavier at one time.

The Canterbury-Wellington meeting on the Basin Reserve in the Football Association trophy on Saturday attracted quit© a big crowd (about 5000 being present), no other senior game in either Soccer or Rugbv being played. It was a glorious day, and tho grandstand and enclosure were full, while a fair crowd also occupied the other part of the ground. THE TEAMS The teams were : Wellington—A. Tarrant; A. Gibb and L. McGirr; H. Brown, D. McKee and J. Burke; E. Barton, It. Anderson, J. Lothian, C. Ballard and W. Cudby. Canterbury.—J. McDougall, J. Pur die and J Ritchie ; J. Wales. G. Roberts and T. Howartli; S. Gibb se the wing pass and the ball trav elled via McKee an 1 Anderson to Bar ton. who sent behind. From a throwin Ballard went all but through, only to find, the whistle go with Lothian offside Gibb relieved when Trotter w;ts nearly through, and McKee, recciving from nght wing, tried McDougall with a well-judged shot. Cudbv came close to registering from Me Kee. Canterbury again advanced on the left wing, but Gibb was there, hnt on the right Tarrant had to dash nut smartly and give a corner to keep MtLnuchlan out. From the corner kick Wellington cleared well through Me Giir, who saved a dangerous-looking shot, and away the blacks went, Cudby in possession. Tie crossed the line into the goal area, where h© wa* grassed, but Ballard carried on and simply walked the ball into the net. Wellington I Canterbury «. 0 Wellington were at once od. the at tack and McDougall had to clear his line smartly from Lothian, but a return from Barton was badly missed by Lothian and Cudby. Anderson and Lothian both had flying shots which meant business, but both went wide. The passing amongst the Wellington forwards was gool, and the Canterbury defence found them very hard to bold. The left wing was pressing consistently and a beautiful centre from Ballard saw Lothian net No. 2. A GOOD LEAD CanterbAy- the left wing forwards, but Trotter was not placing too well when -swinging in. Then from Sutherland a pass went across the goal mouth, drawing Tarrant out, and for a moment there was open goal. Gibb dropped, into goal post as Trotter shot ana saved an otherwise certain goal. A flag kick was cleared comfortably, and Burke, passing to Cudby, a good centre was headed away by Purdie, from which McKee, with a long punt, sent over. T. Howarth did some very good tackling against Brown and Barton, and he gave Trotter a chance at which he made good use. Trieking Gibb, he flew past and sent in a shot which looked like netting, but Tarrant saved, although conceding a corner. The flag kick dropped by the far post, whero Mo Lauchlan shot, but Tarrant dived and brought off a miraculous save. Play was then transferred via Burke and Cudby, but Purdie beat Ballard and cleared. Johu3ton came close to scoring from Trotter's pass, but Tarrant, on the alert, saved the situation. Brown. Barton and Anderson then figured in a fine combined run on the wing, and the short passing was pretty to see. A lovely pasr from Barton was taken by McDougad off Lothian's toes A PENALTY SAVED Then Oudbv was seen in a brilliant run on the left wing, simply flying past the half and hack, and it was a grand centre he put in. McDougall made a splendid catch and cleared ns Lothian jumped in. Canterbury then pressed the Wellington defence, Burke being penalised for treading on McLauchlan’s heels in the penalty area, bringing him down. A penalty kick was awarded and was taken by Ritchie, and the crowd applauded Tarrant vociferously as he made a brilliant loft-handed save. Anderson put in a lovely shot which only misled bv inches, and when play went to the other wing Wal- s again spoiled a run by Ballard and Cudby neatly intercepting the pass. The red and blacks then sought to get past McGirr. but Gibb backed up, ana Barton went on a long sprint. Right across goal mouth flashed the ball, Cudby returning outside the net. McKee next received from Roberts and sent up the centre. Ballard let it pass to Lothian, but as the latter netted the whistle rightly went for offside. Anderson did a clever hit of dribbling, but Howarth prevented the final pass reaching Barton Again Lothian was penalised for being offside. Sutherland received from Roberts and tried to run round McGirr. lut the latter managed to put. him off his shot, which wont over. Barton and Andor son changed places momentarily, tricking the half, and a beautiful shot went in from Barton os he carried the ball well in field. A corner kirk to Wellington bvl just been taken when the 'nterval came. Wellington 2 Canterbury 0 SECOND SPELL. Wellington promptly carried the game to Canterbury, Ballard sending across to Anderson, who put in a terrific shot, hut McDougall saved well. Canterbury broke away smartly from this, and Sutherland, centring smart]r. Trotter netted with Tarrant outside the goal. Wellington 2 Canterbury 1

From Burke, Barton went away and put the ball across. Lothian let it go to Ballard, who shot hard, the goalie saving brilliantly. Cudby returned, but Purdie cleared neatly. Lothian tried a speculator, which went high over goal. Both tho Wellingti-u wings were pressing the visitors’ defence,

and quit© a duel took place between tho Wellington left wing and the Canterbury defence, Wales proving very hard to boat. McGirr held up the Canterbury right wing, and then Crown and Gibb nearly tricked Trotter and McDougall. Away went Anderson, and a lovely chonce caroe, but tbo goalie saved shots from Lothian and Ballard in fine style, a splendid bit of work. Still pressing, Bitchie punted to midjield, where McKee trapped, ran the hall down a dozen yards, and sent in a fast goal shot, which entered the net just by the post. Wellington 3 Canterbury 1 From the re-start, Wellington again assaulted, but J. McDougall saved a beauty tram Cudby at the expense of a corner. Cudby dropped tne flagkick just right, and Lothian netted as an avalanche of forwards rushed in on the goal. Welungion 4 {Janteruury 1 FINAL DASH. Canterbury now essayed to break through on the riglit, and twice Sutherland sent in good centres. Johnstone headed up in the air in front of the bar, and Tarrant fisted clear. Burke took the ball from the danger zone, and once more Canterbury were defending, McDougall having to save from Burke. Barton was hurt rather badly, a hard shot from Ritchie taking him in the stomach. The Canterbury left wing could not get going, but Sutherland again made Tarrant handle smartly. Barton soon came back, and Anderson touching to him, he* sent in a centre, which Lothian headed for goal, but narrowly missed. Wellington were doing most of the pressing, and good work by McDougall in goal was •excellently done. McDougall, carrying the ball on his head, passed Brown an McKee, and sent a beautiful shot, which made Tarrant throw himself full length to save. Canterbury came near to getting through the centre, but Gibb put him off, and although close in he skied the bail over the top. This was almost tho last effort, and Burke, who had tackled and secured the ball, fell and hurt himself just as the whistle went and had to be helped off the field. .Final score: ’ 'Wellington 4 Canterbury 1 THE fICK. Gibb was the best of the Wellington ■pair of backs, McKee and Burke of the halves, Ballard, Cudby, and Barton of the forwards, while Tarrant was excellent in goal and could not have done better. The Canterbury goalie ■ was in good nick, as were Purdie, Wales, Howarth, and Sunderland. The left wing wa's weak, and throughout Canterbury 'worked the riglit wing whenever possible. The ■ game was quite a good one, but Wellington were the best side a!I the way through. FOR~AMOS~CUP NORTH v. SOUTH* MARI STS The challenge match for the Amos Cup presented for competition between the Christchurch and Wellington Marist third division teams was staged as a curtain-raiser to the WellingtonCanterbury match on the Basin. The football exhibited was of a mediocre standard. With better luck Christchurch would undoubtedly have defeated the local boys. The teams were:— Wellington Marist.—Troy; Wilson and Guinan; Grimshaw, Manoney and O’Connor; McLean, Donovan, Fouhy, Friend, and Austin. Christchurch Marist—Archer; Grimes and Shivloy; McDonald, Noonan, and Flood; Turner, McGlinchy, Sweeney, Woodham, and Radford. The game opened promisingly, but bad judgment on the part of the respective forwards robbed the match of much of its interest. Wellington attacked per Donovan, hut fine defensive play on the part of Shirley and Grimes prevented the home team becoming dangerous. Sweeney tried Troy with a stainging shot which beat the goalie all the way. Christchurch 1, Wellington 0. Half-time was called with the score unaltered. Sweeney, who was playing a promising game, received from Woodham, and with a great solo run sent in a beauty that baffled Troy ail the way. Christchurch 2, Wellington 0. With a leeway of two goals Wellington settled down to reduce their opponents’ lead, and this they did very shortly after. Donovan became associated with Fouhy in a determined attack, and with a first time drive Donovan found the net, thus nutting more courage into his team. Cnristchurch 2, Wellington 1. Wellington kept up the pressure, and from a nice combined run in which Wilson, Donovan, Fouhy, and Friend participated, Wilson drove in a hard baffling shot that Archer failed to see —two all. Midfield play followed. Full time saw play in midfield, the game ending in a draw of two goals each. Mr W. Duncan, chairman of the Wellington Football Association, pre- 1 Rented the cup to the captain of the Christchurch team at the conclusion of tho match.. The visitors returned south by the evening’s ferry steamer. junioFresults FOURTH B DIVISION. Petone 0, Miramar Rangers 0. FIFTH A DIVISION. Marist 7, Institute 1. Technical 4, Petono 1.
