DISTRESSED SEAMEN
EFFORTS FOR RELIEF A meeting ot representatives from the Toe H. British Sailors’ Society ami the Sailors' Rest Society was held in the sailors' rest rooms on Saturday evening, to discuss what could be done for the distressed seamen and stewards who are entirely without the wherewithal to provide for food or shelter during the next month or so. There are at present in Wellington approximately 260 men in the nbovo condition. These societies provide a* far as possible shelter and food, hut find the present conditions more than they can cope with. It was decided to provide these men with one hot meal per day and shelter lor the night. With this in view they appeal to the generosity of the public to help them to relieve distress with gifts of cash or kind. Anyone wishing to help will kindly communicate with Mr 1). McCallum.
