A WOMAN’S DEATH

PERITONITIS THE CAUSE EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. The death of Elsie Davis, a married woman, at tlie Wellington Hospital on Wednesday last, was the subject of an inquiry before the coroner, Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., yesterday. Dr. Richard Bowden Martin, house surgeon at the Wellington Hospital, gave evidence that the deceased was admitted to the institution on July 14th. She remained in his charge until July 10th, nnd was doing well, but on that date she was transferred at her own request to n private hospital. On Julv 20th she was readmitted to Wellington Hospital, suffering from general peritonitis, and was operated upon, but died early the next morning. The coroner: Do you think she was affected by the removal from one hospital to another?—l think it would have been in her best interests to have remained in the Wellington Hospital, but the result would probably have been tbe same. Dr. P. P. Lynch, pathologist at the Wellington Hospital, who conducted a post-mortem examination of the deceased, said that death, in his opinion. was duo to general peritonitis. To Chief-Detective Ward: Witness said he had found no wounds which might have been caused by the use of an instrument, but an instrument could have been used without leaving any wounds. A verdict in accordance with the. medical testimony was returned, the coroner stating that he did not propose to comment on the other evidence that liad hoon given in the ca^e.
