A Press message from Christchurch states that Mr S. H. Fournier, Communist leader, is no longer in charge of the uncmplovment relief department. Mr H. Hargreaves was appointed secretary. A number of cases of relief were reported. Most of the men out of work are cither single or wrtii small families. The Lyttelton waterslders are taking a ballot next week in respect to the offer of tho employers of an increase of Id an hour provided the men consent to work on Saturday afternoons. A previous ballot resulted in tho offer Ccing declined. There are 130 unemployed registered nt Invercargill, including several carpenters. A four-roomed cottago on tho Te Whiti soldier settlement, near Masterton, owned and occupied by H. D. Thorpe, was destroyed by fire. Tb« occupiers lost everything. A dance was held and £lO raised to assist the distressed family.
