SHAKESPEARE FIRST A referendum of the 2000 yearly subscribers to the State Drama (Burgthenter) in Vienna, placed Shakespeare first in the list of favourites of the serious theatre-going public. The plays voted tor the next season were: “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,’’ “The Merchant of Venice,” “Macbeth,” “Coriolanus,” and “The Taming of the Shrew.” Oscar Wilde was returned second, notably with his “Lady Windermere’s Fan,” while Schiller, Ibsen, Schnitzler, Rostand, Hebbel and Grillparzer follow in the list. Shakespeare and Wilde between them obtained 1219 of the 2000 votes cast.
