SOLDIER SETTLERS

T’IOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES DIFFICULTIES BEFORE R.S.A. In referring to the question of discharged soldier settlement, the annual report of 'he It.S.A. executive stated yesterday: “In respect to assisting those soldiers who financed themselves on to the land your executive found it exceedingly difficult to arrive at any suitable suggestion which could be submitted to the Government. From the remarks made by the late Right Hon. W. F. Massey it was understood that the Governimnt was sympathetically disposed towards such class of soldier, but to suggest a solution of the difficulty was almost an impossible task because the majority of farmers' who are in this class took up farms valued at thousands ot pounds, and to such men the maximum D.S.S. advance would be but little use. “However, j’our Dominion executive feels that if there are any of this class of ex-soldier in difficulties whose property is subject to an advance of ov less, their cases might very well be submitted to headquarters to support its suggestion that if the D.S.S. Act cannot deal with these cases then the State Advances Department should endeavour to give preference to the applications of exsoldiers in this category.”
