EARLY MANCHESTER HISTORY
Very little certain knowledge exists of the early history of Manchester, whose vast town-planning scheme is arousing so much interest, but it has its duo share of romantic traditions. There, for instance, Tarquin, an enemy of King Arthur, kept his castle, and was overthrown by Lancelot, and there for a time Ina, King of Wessex, had his court. That Manchester- suffered severely from the Danes seem§ pretty certain, and in Domesday Book it is one of the only four places mentioned in the now d ensely-popuTated South-East Lancashire. Tts connectipn with textiles is at least as early as the 13th century.
