COALS AND TUNNELS

DEPARTMENTAL EXPERIMENTS Recently the Wellington branch of the New” Zealand Locomotive Engineers, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association passed a resolution condemning the use in tunnels of New Zealand coals which are of a sulphurous nature. From inquiries made at the headquarters of the department, it appears that this resolution is apparently the outcome of recent tests which the department carried out with view to finding out to what extent New Zealand coals could be used. It is the intention of the depart-, ment to conduct further trials of all classes of coals, anil where it is found that, by using any particular class injurious effects are likely to be caused to the crew the matter will, of course, he fully considered before such coal is supplied for use in the service.
