DOMINION INDUSTRIES

SIR FRANK HEATH’S REPORT SCIENTIFIC ASSISTANCE. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, May 27. Commenting on the Heath report, Mr James Hogg, president of the Manufacturers’ Association, stated that the association had always held the view that the Department of Industries and Commerce went only halfway by appointing accountancy officers in each centre, and that the real need of the manufacturers would be met by the appointment of technical experts in the lour industrial centres. Sir Frank Heath’s recommendation for addition to the staff of the Industries Department would prove helpful. The manufacturers had hoped for the establishment of laboratories in the four centres, where problems in regard to both raw materials and finished articles would be worked .out. They had always expressed willingness to contribute financially to the establishment of an industrial research organisation. While Sir Frank Heath’s report did not go as far as the manufacturers would have liked, his personal visit had created a ‘‘research spirit,” and the central authority recommended in the report, could rely upon the full cooperation of the manufacturers. DAIRY PROBLEMS HAWERA LABORATORY. HAWERA, May $!. A special meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this morning discussed the references in Sir Frank Heath’s report concerning the dairy laboratory at Hawera, and adopted a resolution strongly urging that nothing should be done to interfere with the good work of tho Hawera laboratory in its prao tical application to the scientific assistance of the dairy manufacturing problems and dairy factories in the province. The chamber further considers that the enterprise of the Taranaki Federation of Dairy Factories in establishing, with Government assistance, this scientific service should not ho discouraged by the suggested discontinuation of the subsidy. The resolution is to he forwarded to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Agriculture.
