IN A RAGING GALE
RESCUE OF DISABLED SHIP TOW-LINE SNAPPED LIKE THREAD DEVON TELLS THE STORY By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received May 21, 10.40 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 21. The steamer Devon tells by wireless an epic story of her rescue of the Eastern Moon in a raging gale. The Devon first picked up a wireless from tlie disabled steamer on last Monday, and stood by. Both steamers were pitching and rolling heavily. Later the Eastern Moon asked to be taken in tow, as the tug had not appeared, and then a long battle began. Only after six attempts was a steel hawser made fast between tlie two ships, and the safely of the Eastern Moon practially assured. The crew of the rescuing ship worked desperately. At one time tlie tow-line snapped like a thread, but gallant efforts were rewarded, and tlie crippled vessel was slowlv brought to port. The tug Lindfield. which was despatched to rescue the Eastern Moon, arrived at Newcastle. Her silence was due to her wireless being damaged.
