STRIKE MAY NOT LAST LONG
AUSTRALIAN MINE-DRIVERS MINERS WANT TO WORK. By Telegraph.-Pr^A^m-Oorsri^t. Tho indications are that the enginedrivers* strike on the coalfields will be brought to an end at an early date. Officials of the Miners’ Federation, realising that the rank and file of the nnion are strongly opposed to continued idleness, are pressing for an early settlement. The millers’ representatives and the engine-drivers have given permission for members of the Miners’ Federation to fill slack or small coal at grass at Whitburn Colliery in the Maitland district. The object of thri move is said to he to provide supplies for the Broken Hill Steel Works at Newcastle. Otherwise the works would he compelled to close down, throwing idle between 4000 and 5000 men.
