HOUSE PROFITEERS
Tho profiteering methods practised by some tenants of houses were commented on at the monthly meeting of ihe Property Owners’ Protection Association at the Memorial Hall, Earringdon street, London. Councillor A. G. Shearing said that the sub-tenants were getting all the profit and the owner of th© house waa getting all the blame. in on© instance the total rental received by the principal tenant was £240, and the rent paid to the landlord was £55. These rents were being exacted from the poorest. A poor cross-ing-sweeper was charged 18s a week for one small back roohi, unfurnished. A L.C.O. house, for which 15s a week was charged, was rclet furnished at five guineas a week. Bor a floor known to have been let at 10s a week pre-war there was no legal right to charge more than 15s a week to-day.
