LOSS OF GOLD REVENUE

POSITION AT WAIHI.

Per Press Association.

HAMILTON, April 20. In view of the reduction in gold duty, upon which the council has been largely dependent in the past, the difficulties in which the Wailii Borough Council finds itself through the largely increased hospital levy were represented to the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister for Health. The Minister was asked if a Bpecial subsidy could be obtained. It was shown fihat the council’s revenue from gold duty had receded from £25,000 to £6OOO per annum, while tho hospital levy had increased to £2OOO.

The Minister did not‘hold out much hope of the council obtaining a special subsidy. He counselled the board to keep its administrative expenditure in bounds, and to meet the needs of the people of its own district, and not take patientß from other districts.
