CITY OFFICERS

DELAY IN APPOINTMENTS TOWN-PLANNING PREPARATIONS STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR Regarding the appointment of tho now town clerk and the new city engineer, the Mayor (Mr O. J. B. Norwood) stated yesterday that a final decision would not be made at the council’s nest meeting. It was doubtful whether the applications from Great Britain and Canada, through Messrs Precce, Cardew, and Ryder, the council’s London agents, would be here in time. Mr Norwood stated that it was not the council’s wish that there should be this delay, as it would have been much better to start off the new financial year with the new officers. This .delay had also put back the question of the city plan, because it would be better to get the opinion of the officer who had to seo to the carrying out of the plan. Mr Norwood also stated that he hoped to place £IOOO on the estimates this year. That amount, he said, would not be sufficient to complete the necessary work, but it would help it on considerably. As soon ns the first arrangements were the Mar yor proposed to call a meeting of ml bodies and people who were in any way, or who might become, interested in town planning. By ’these means a working basis might be .arrived at. Speaking of Courtenay place particularly, Mr Norwood remarked that thero was ’Wellington’s opportunity to establish a really fine show street. “All cities have one or more of these show streets,’’ he said, “why not Wellington ? The treatment of the northern end of the Kent terrace reserve has opened the eyes of people who for so long regarded this reserve as a dingy place, and some day I hope to see the full length improved in the same way. with a really fine lighting system to set it off at night.”
