PETONE AFFAIRS PROPOSALS FOR LOAN STREET WIDENING DISCUSSED A special meeting of the Pet one Borough Council was held last night, the object being to discuss certain loans iu connection with tho Loans Committee’s report. Present at the meeting were Mr J. X AV. McEwan (Mayor), and Councillors N. Brocklebank, D. McCarthy. A. Scholefield, A. Campbell, W. A. Edwards, H. # Jay, V. Jacobson, G. Cook, and J. Sharpe. The Mayor, in discussing the proposal for "hill drainage ,(the cost of which the committee estimated at about £7200), said that he agreed with the report suggesting the piping of Ridler’s Creek, Nelson street, to the railway, besides Moran’s Creek; inasmuch as the wliolo job could he completed at once. This would overcome the difficulty of doing bits at a time. “Wo want Petono to go ahead,” said Mr McEwan. “At present,** ho added, “the scheme cannot be put into operation too scon.” The town clerk, Mr W. F. Sturman. said that, as regards the widening of Jackson street, the cost to tho council would be roughly £12,700. This included the moving of various shops and tho compensating of business people for their losses during tho time when improvements are going on. The council decided to have the part of the street in question widened. The Mayor also asked that a report ho presented at the next meeting of t the council showing what it would cost to widen another part of Jackson street near Webley’s buildings. It was also agreed at tho meeting to borrow £IO,OOO for the purpose of carrying out the proposed sewer extension j scheme, which is to run from the Eastern Extension to the old borough boundary. This area includes the sandhilL and Priest’s Avenue. lower hutt council LAST NIGHT’S MEETING VARIOUS ACTIVITIES. A meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council took place last night. Present were Mr AV. T. Strand (Mayor), Councillors A. J. Hobbs, A. Grierson, J. Mitchell, L. T. Watkins, E. AV. Hunt, H. J. Toagle. E. AValdie, AAV G. Meldrum, A. Mcßain. The Wellington Show Association wrote stating that the Winter Show is to be held from July 10th to the 29th, and asking that a display he made representing the products and trade of this district. The executive is prepared to grant a space of 150 square feet free of charge, and would alsj provide £lO towards tho expenses of tho display. The association also asks generally for assistance in the interests of tho show It was decided to give consideration to the letter, especially if the result would benefit the Hutt borough. A letter was received from the G.P.0.. Wellington; in which it stated that tho department has carefully considered the council's request, for the erection of a coin in the slot telephone at V.I.C. corner, and regret that, in view of the large estimated deficiency on tho working of an installation at th? site proposed, the department would not he warranted in expending the amount involved. vising that the term of office of Mr H, Baldwin as the council’s representative on the board expired on the 31st ultimo, and asking that arrangements bo made for the representation of the council on the board as early as possible.—lt was unanimously decided to reappoint Mr Baldwin. The following letter was read from tho AATellington Hospital Board, enclosing their estimated expenditure for the rear ended March 31srt, 1927. It will be noted that the council’s proportion of the levy is £2533 11s 3d as against £2155 4s 2d last year. The reason for the increase in the levy will probably be found m the fact that last year the ratable value of the borough was £1,653,336, while this year the value is £2,160,030.—The letter was received.
