NEED FOR PRUDENCE
THE TRADE BALANCE WILL BE AGAINST US IMPORTS EXCEEDING EXPORTS PRIME MINISTER SAYS NO NEED FOR ALARM Though there is no need for alarm, New Zealand will have to exercise caution in expenditure in the near future. This is an opinion held by people who consider themselves in a position to speak authoritatively. The Prime Minister, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, said yesterday that though the information was not complete, the indications are that the balance for the trade year will be against us. It is obvious, he says, that if our imports exceed our exports we will have to draw in somewhere. He does not consider there is the slightest need for alarm, but does consider that the Government, local bodies, private enterprises, and individuals will have to exercise great.care in the matter of expenditure. “I don’t say there must be drastic economy, but there must be prudence,” was his point. It is expected that, owing to .the dry season, there will be a falling-off in our meat export, and it is pointed out that the lower price of wool will mean a big drop in the value of our exports.
