HORTICULTURE
IN HUTT VALLEY The unusually dry conditions which have prevailed for some time past in most parts of the appear to have affected the fertility ot the Hutt valley. . . ~ There is probably no district in the world where the art of growing “mums" in the open is so largely practised as in the Hutt valley, one grower actually having a quarter of an acre devoted to exhibition blooms. This enthusiasm is largely due to the activities of the local Horticultural Society, which has for some 35 years catered in a very generous manner to encourage the of these handsome flowers. \ The competition this year is expect, ed to he unusually keen in the open class, as the 20-guinea silver challenge trophy is coveted by at least half a dozen valley growers, to s &r nothing of several from further afield. The amateur section is also likely to )>o very interesting, as a number of young growers, who each year get nearer perfection, are likely to chase the present holder of the £lO 10s cup.
