JAMES COLLIERY
PROSPECTING OPERATIONS ' TRIAL SAMPLES OF COAL. A. few years ago prospecting and boring operations carried out on the low coastal ranges near Point Elizabeth resulted in the proving of an eight-foot coal seam over -a workable area estimated at 400 acres, the quantity of coal in the proved area being estimated at about 4,800,000 tons. It was then decided to establish a colliery thereon, named the .Tames Colliery, and in 1922 production of output was commenced. Trial samples of the coal from this colliery have, upon test, shoWn that it is a first-class household coal, and since the commencement of operations approximately 100,000 tons have been produced,, mainly to meet the demand for household requirements. ' A block of this coal was to the Wembley Exhibition for display in the New Zealand pavilion, and the IVitish Elmpire Exhibition directors have seen* fit to award a .medal to the exhibit, together with a. decorative certificate. The medal, which is of handsome design, together with the certificate, Was recently received by department.
