OLD PIONEER PASSES

RESIDENT OF MARLBOROUGH MR WILLIAM 3IFFORD. Per Press Association. BLENHEIM, April 16. The death oocurred at hie residence, Rdpaura, of Mr William Gifford, one of Marlborough’* oldest settlers who had resided in the district for 78 years. The late Mr Gifford was a son of Mr Isaao Gifford/ one of the pioneer settlers of Nelson, and was born at Appleby, in the Nelson district, in 1848. When 26 years of age the late Mr Gifford entered into partnership with his brother, Mr Thomas Gifford, and purchased a property at Spring Creek, and later he bought out his brother’s interest. The deceased took a keen interest in public affairs, and was for many years a member of the local school committee, member of the Spring Creok Road Board, and Spring Creek River Board. He was also actively associated with tbe Marlborough A. and I*. Association and Farmers’ Union for a very long period.
