PUBLIC OPINION

CITY COUNCIL TRADING DEPARTMENTS (To the Editor “N.Z. Times.”) Sir, —X could not help feeling pardonable pride in my native city when X read ip this morning’s “Times” the wonderful profits made by the Dunedin City Council in all their trading departments. Truly, for municipal government, as in all other commercial enterprises, they lead the way in New Zealand, and your report should provide much food for thought to the local City Council. Here is Dunedin with the cheapest electricity charges in New Zealand, and onftop 0 f that she mahes a profit of £33,494. The profits in the tramway department are even more pronounced, being Ihe huge sum of £41,504, and this, mark you, is produced with a fleet of trams and ’buses probably numbering not half that of/ Wellington, and charging penny section fares into the bargain. ''The water department sliows a profit of £22,418. It would be interesting, sir, if you or the chairman of the finance committee of the Wellington City Council could put their' corresponding figures beside these. It would at the very least make an interesting comparison.—X am, etc., " . - DUNEDIN. April 16th, 1926. AN APPEAL SAILORS' FRIEND SOCIETY (To the Editor, ‘*N.Z. Times.’*) Sir, —May I appeal through the columns of your well-known paper respecting a matter that was overlooked in 1904, when the building was bo generously given by the late beloved donor for the use of seamen of all creeds and colour^? The omission was the heating of the building, this with much inconvenience to all. We have tried to oonquer with oil stoves, etc., but have failed; it now hoped that sufficient funds will be forthcoming to enable us to install some other system that will banish the cold on the chilly evenings when so many thousands of seafarers of all nations and creeds make our institute their home, when so far from home. May I add, sir, that any Bums your readers entrust to us will be officially acknowledged, and will be very highly appreciated.—l am, etc., JAS. MOORE, Missioned.
