SWITCHBOARD DESTROYED COUNTRY SUPPLY CUT OFF. Per Press Association. HAWERA, April 15Shortly before one o’clock thii morning the new powerhouse at Ka* ponga, belonging to the Town Board, was seriously damaged by fire. The brigade arrived promptly, but tho outbreak had secured a strong hold. Tho engineer visited the powerhouse at 11.30 p.m. when there was no sign of anything unusual. The origin of the outbreak cannot be definitely stated, but it is presumed that an electric fusion took place behind the switchboard and made an arc which set th© roof ablaze Th© damage includes the destruction of the switchboard and the turbine, flywheel and bearings of the generator arc damaged, but not beyond repair. The damage is approximately assessed at £UXXh . The insurances amount to £550. The town supply is drawn from a separate powerhouse and is not affected, but till to-morrow night no country supply will be available, and then only a limited quantity.
