COSTLIEST SALT-CELLAR

A salt-cellar, made during the reig* of Queen Elizabeth and regarded a» one of the finest pieces of old silver in existence, has been purchased bjg, the Victoria and Albert Museum, after negotiations that have lasted tor more than a year. The purchase price runs into many thousands of pounds, and the purchase was made possible by the assistance of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, the National Art Collections Fund, and Mr Edmund A. Phillips. Part of the money came from the Parliamentary vote for museum ex-

penses. , ~ The salt-cellar is known os the “Vyvyan Salt.” It belonged to the Vyvyan family of Trelowarren, Cornwall. It is designed as a square tower, supported on four lions. The cover carries a figure of Justice. It has panels of glass decorated with gold and silver leaf, and bears the London hall-mark for 1592. with an unknown maker’s name.
