MINERS’ PAST TROUBLES
The present elaborate machinery set up to bring British coalminers and their employers together to tempt peace into the pits, recalls, by wny of contrast, tho meek methods of (ho miners of the past. In 1739 the colliers . were suffering peculiar distress, "and in order to excite compassion a number of them yoked themselves to a wagon of coal nnd drew it into Bath and presented it to Mr Nash." Such confidence drew the Bran. He at once headed a subscription, list with 10 guineas, and circulated it with his autocratic blessing. In a later day—in 1815—distressed miners dragged loads of coal to London, and sought to lay the grievances before the Prince Regent. But here the magistrates bade them go home and not trouble London’s august personages. And they went home-
