GOSSIP OF THE TURF

TALK FROM TRACK AND STABLE

(By

"CARBINE.”)

Vertigern, winner of the Juvenile Handicap run at Masterton last Saturday, is an Australian-bred gelding by I Rossendale, from Pansy. Vertigern cost 800 guineas when bought as a yearling last April by Mr C. 33. Elgar. Riding engagements announced for Pukekohe on Saturday are as follows: W. Jones: Dan Quin, Mosaic, Judge's Box and Winsome Boy. R. Nixon: i Gala Day and Knighthood R. MeTavish : Rangitahi, Monday, Royal Form and Surveyor. H. Wiggins; Princess Ronnie, Marble Mount, Some Lady and Exactly. R. Orange: Homai. J. Gray; Right and Left. H. Dulieu has been engaged to ride Gala Day in the Easter Handicap, and W. Ryan will he on Lady Ridicule in the same event. G. C. Young has been engaged to ride Glenidle in the Brighton Hurdles. Mr H. L. Russell had fully decided on taking his team south for the Canterbury Jockey Club's Easter meeting (says a northern writer), but with the poor form shown by Siaosi at the Te Aroha and Ohinemuri meetings, and the breaking down of Berinthia at the lastnamed gathering, it would appear a waste of time to carry out that programme. At a meeting held in Dublin on February 4th the stewards of the Irish Turf Club considered a proposal to introduce Hie totalisator at meetings in Ireland. The tone of the meeting was favourable towards its adoption, and a committee was appointed to consider the matter fully. The committee will then report back to the general meeting. The French-bred horse Bolet Satin, who was bought at auction in England by Sir Samuel Hordern for 2000 guineas, has proved a perfect disappointment in his racing efforts in Australia, and mat* ters are stated to he the reverse of promising for his winning back the amount expended in his purchase. The latest addition to T. George's team is Master Thurnham, who has Men working for some time under the direction of his owner and is in good condition. Master Doon has been showing indications of returning to form and was a good second at his last start, since when be has been infusing plenty of dash into his track efforts (says the Auckland "Herald"). The Lucullus gelding has not looked better for a long time. There are a number of the Brighton Hurdles candidates engaged in the Jumpers' Flat Handicap at Pukekohe on Saturday, and their running will be watched with interest. A victory in the Jumpers' Elat will not entail a rehandicap. Appellant has been galloping well and is seemingly on the improve. This horse was very unlucky at Matamata and is considered nicely placed in the Waiuku Hack Welter at Pukekohe. ''Among the acceptors for the Bombay Handicap at Pukekohe is Wiltshire, who finished a creditable second to Pegaway in the Frankton Handicap at Te Rapa in November. Wiltshire hns only had the one start this season and if he has made any progress in the meantime should stow up in his engagement on Saturday. The racing he had at Paeroa did Serang no harm and now that he has shown a little form ho may go on improving. Serang is in the right class to prove his worth at Pukekohe on Saturday."—"NZ. Herald." For the second year in succession Right and Left won the Tauranga Cup on Saturday last. The Merry Moments gelding relishes the small fields he meets at the minor meetings. An Amorican paper, in discussing early racing in New Orleans, had the following:—"The Metairie Jockey Club was a most important body, socially as well as in respect of racing, until about 1873. Its end was brought about by a wealthy citizen of New Orleans named Howard. He wished to become a member of the club, but was blackballed. This he regarded as a personal insult, and publicly announced that because of this insult he would turn the famous fashionable high-toned race track into a cemetery He ultimately became possessed of the property, and, true to his word, dismantled the ground and made one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the United States." Recently a consignment of 40 thoroughbreds left Australia for Japan. Besides importing Australian horse 6, Japan is going to model its racing on Australian lilies. A committee from the Japanese racing clubs will shortly be going to Australia to visit racecourses, and to obtain ideas for the improvement of racing in their own country. A substantial sum was offered for Wharncliffe after he won the hurdle race at Waimato last week, but ns he is a gift horso his owneT declined to sell. TRIPLE DEAD-HEATS Apropos of the triple dead heat registered at Napier Park last week, and a similar finish at Trentham a few years ago, the Auckland "Herald" 6tates that the first instance recorded in New Zealand (as far as the researches of the writer showed) was in connection with the City Handicap (one mile and a auarter), run at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting at Ellerslie on November 10th, 1894. The horses involved were First Nelson (7.6), Forme (8.1), and Ben Godfrey (8.6'. The three horses were sent out later in the day to run off the dead-heat. Ben Godfrey, who ruled the favourite for the first race, ruled likewise when the dead heat had to be run off. Unfortunately, just when the horses reached the distance, and when excitement was at a high pitch, there was a collision, in which Forme and Ben Godfrey suffered, and First Nelson won by two lengths. Some nine years subcequently Ellerslie was again the srene of a triple dead-heat. St. Olga (10.4), Paritutu (9.12), and Miss Lottie (9.5>, were bracketed for the Prince of Wales Handicap (seven furlongs), which wep run at the A” klomL-Racing Club's winter meeting o i June Cth, 1903. On that occasion the owners divided the stake money, which meant a cheque each for «£loft. At the Stratford meeting held on January 19th, 1893, a remarkable finish was recorded • connection with the Flying Hand 1

(six furlnogs), in which Shiela (8.5), 7 tiny (9.12), and Chatterbox (7.7) flashed past* the post level. In the run-off Shiela won by a neck from Mutiny, with Chatterbox close up. It may be reinarked that dividends were paid out on (lie three horses which figured the dead-heat, and that when the run-off came to be undertaken the tutnllpator was attain in operation. The acceptances received by the Wellington Trotting Club its meeting to bo held on Saturday are eminently satisfactory. The High Class Trot has drawn a fine field of nine, and with only six seconds between the limit and' the backmarker, the race can be looked upon almost as a square-gaifed free-for-all. The Hutt Licensing Committee met yesterday to consider the application for . a conditional license for a publican's booth at Saturday's trotting races. There was no opposition to the proposal, and the license was granted unanimously. With a total of 98 acceptors for the day, the average is over 12 per race. Judge Hancock has been accepted for in tho Armstrong Handicap, in preference to the High Class Handicap for trotters only. His connections evidently consider the former event the easier of the two. Peter Bingen and Golden Devon axe the only horses in the Recovery Handicap that do’ not . claim engagements earlier in the day. A splendid field of 21 has accepted for the Beach Handicap, a mile and a half pacers* race with a 3.38 limit.

There are 18 horses in the mile saddle event, including such well-known performers as Firpo, Why Worry, Golden Bubbles, Pearl Coronado, and Rita Rye—all previous winners on the Hutt Course.
