WORLD-WIDE APPEAL

FOR SHAKESPEARE MEMORIAL LARGER THEATRE NECESSARY NOW WITH ADEQUATE ENDOWMENT Bv Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received March 24, 8.60 p.m.) LONDON, March 24. The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre has launched a world-wide Appeal for £250,000 to rebuild the burnt theatre, and to provide for its perpetual endowment. Mr Baldwin, Mr Ramsay MacDonald and Lords Oxford and Asquith signed a letter to the Press of the world, pointing out that it had been possible to see eight different plays in a single week at the theatre, and its beneficial work had been acknowledged by the King’s grant of a Royal Charter; but the theatre, which was adequate 50 years ago, is inadequate now for the spectators from all parts of the Empire who attend Shakespearean fes-' tivals.

The hope is expressed that millions of Shakespeare lovers in the Dominions and the United States will he eager to help in rebuilding and endowing tho theatre on a worthy scale.
