ATTACK ON DESTROYERS
JAPAN WILL NOT RETALIATE BUT WILL DEMAND ASSURANCES. Renter’s Telegram. TOKIO, March 14. In regard to the Chinese attack on Japanese destroyers, a Foreign Office official stated that he doeß not expect retaliation, but Japan will demand an absolute assurance that there will he no recurrences in the future. He said the principal fenr_ was the anger of the Japanese public, but the attitude of the people is believed to he much different from what it was a decade ago, when such an incident would have aroused terrific indignation.
One destroyed proceeded to Port Arthur with the wounded. The others are anchored in tho Taku river awaiting instructions. The Government is awaiting suggestions from an Allied Consular, meeting at Tientsin. It is stated that Japan may act independently, but it is hoped that the Powers will agree to some method of future protection. The matter of punishment of the Chinese attackers and indemnities will be considered by Japan later. '
