NGAIO HELD UP

•t FIREMEN REFUSE TO SAIL

REQUIRE BULKHEAD CAULKED

VESSEL ALLEGED TO BE LEAKING

Tbe Anchor Company’s passenger •teamer Ngaio, which was scheduled to leave Wellington at 7,30 turn. last evening for Aelson, was held up owing to the firemen refusing to take her fco sea.

As the vessel was on the point of jailing the firemen went to the master (Captain Wildman, junr.) and told him that as their forecastle was leaking they would not take the Ngaio to sea. On investigation bv Captain Wildman, it was found that at the foot of the bulkhead between the fore cabin and the firemen’s auarters a small nuantity of water had oozed through. The master called in the ship’s surveyor, who made every effort to trace the leakage, hut was unsuccessful. It is thought that during the washing out of the fore cabin the water had oozed through the bulkhead.

The firemen' were not satisfied, however, and now demanded that the blkhcad be caulked before they tike ►he Ngaio away. As Captain Wildman was unable to got the necessary men to do this work last evening the Ngaio’s departure was postponed until 10 a.m. to-day.
